The Adams Needle bush, Yucca filamentosa, has stiff evergreen rosettes and are part of the scene in hot dry Central and North American scrublands. Yuccas are hardier than they appear, and only fail in cold exposed inland positions, where they are better grown as container plants. Otherwise they are handsome architectural foliage plants for dry, sunny borders. This variety has a white edge. Yucca filamentosa makes dense clumps of stiff leaves 30 inches or so long and edged with fine curly hairs. The remarkable flower-spikes, 6' or more high, appear when plants are five or more years old.
The Alpine Currant, Ribes alpinum, is a very hardy hedge plant that can be kept trimmed to any desired height from 18 inches to 4 feet. The abundant green, glossy foliage forms a dense hedge. Ash Leaf Spirea, 'Sorbaria sorbifolia', is a fast growing plant that has large plumes of creamy white flowers in June. These grow atop the deep green, fern-like foliage. It spreads quickly and is an excellent plant for soil retention. It prefers a moist, well-drained, organic soil. This deciduous shrub is multi-stemmed and grows 6-8 feet tall and 5-10 feet wide. Spireas are among the easiest flowering shrubs to grow since they are tolerant of many soils, except extremely wet. The plant also likes mulch and summer watering and prefers full sun to partial shade. Spireas are great for mass plantings or groupings, screens or border shrubs.
Sem Ash Leaf Spirea, Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Sem' (16, 336), is a pinkish-red, fern-like spring foliage that unfurls along deep pink stems . In July and August the neat, round shrub covers itself with creamy white blossoms. This dwarf variety makes a wonderful low hedge, or a great accent. The Azalea, Formosa, Azalea indica 'Formosa', is a spring blooming plant with evergreen foliage. This Azalea has an upright growth habit and is the best choice for a high light area. The Formosa has beautiful magenta deep colored flowers that grow profusely during the spring. It can get up to 6-8 feet in height and does best on acidic soils. Plant in acid soil in filtered sunlight or light shade, although plants tolerate full sun in cool-summer areas. Use soil rich in organic matter, which retains water and drains quickly. Never prune after mid-summer because those branches produce the next season's flowers.

The Burning Bush, Euonymus alatus 'Compacta' has an outstanding red fall color. The deep dark red leaves almost glow with color in the fall. The plant is shade tolerant but has inferior fall color and reduced density in shade. Burning Bush transplants easily and may be sheared. The corky wings on the twigs hold winter snow, outlining the branch structure. The orange and red fruit is ornamental if produced in quantity, but plants vary in the amount of fruit they produce. The Camellia, Camellia sasanqua, is a landscape shrub, bush, or tree that can grow 20 feet tall.
